OKLAHOMA CITY (March 26, 2025) — The Oklahoma City Council approved Tuesday a proclamation celebrating April as Fair Housing Month.

The measure was supported by the Oklahoma City Metropolitan Association of Realtors (OKCMAR). It highlights the City Council’s support for the federal Fair Housing Act, which was enacted in 1968.

“Realtors are committed to making sure all people have equal access to housing, regardless of their race, color, religion, sex, familial status, national origin and disability status,” OKCMAR Board President Vanessa Johnson said. “We have a professional obligation to support these ideas, and it provides great value to have elected officials demonstrate their support for these principles.”

In support of Fair Housing Month, OKCMAR will offer a variety of activities, including an April 12 program at Rose State College called “Get Your House in Order.” The event, which is in collaboration with Neighborhood Housing Services Oklahoma, includes expert-led sessions on purchasing a home, investing in real estate, and understanding wills and estate planning.

First-time homebuyers, aspiring investors and people looking to secure their family’s future will receive practical guidance on navigating rising homeownership costs, including strategies to save on insurance and other expenses. Online registration is required.

“Our profession’s commitment to treating everyone equally goes beyond just words,” Johnson said. “All Realtors are required to complete fair housing and anti-bias training at least once every three years because it’s important to consistently refresh our knowledge about this crucial topic.”
