OKLAHOMA CITY, OK—The Autism Foundation of Oklahoma (AFO) is proud to announce it has been awarded a significant grant from the Sarkeys Foundation to develop virtual training specifically designed for foster care parents and social workers in Oklahoma. Launching in early 2025, this innovative program will provide critical education about autism and intellectual and developmental disabilities (I/DD), equipping caregivers and professionals with the tools needed to better understand and support children in foster care.

Children in foster care who are on the autism spectrum or have I/DD often face unique challenges that require specialized knowledge and care. AFO’s training program will address this need by offering evidence-based strategies, practical resources, and insights tailored to their circumstances. The virtual format ensures accessibility, allowing foster care parents and social workers across the state to participate at their convenience.

“This training represents a transformative step in ensuring that children with autism and I/DD in Oklahoma’s foster care system receive the care and support they deserve,” said Emily Scott, Executive Director of the Autism Foundation of Oklahoma. “We’re deeply grateful to the Sarkeys Foundation for recognizing this critical need and partnering with us to make a meaningful impact.”

“We are honored to support the Autism Foundation of Oklahoma’s mission to empower foster care parents and social workers with essential knowledge and resources,” said Natalie Carns, Senior Program Officer for Sarkeys Foundation. “This program has the potential to create lasting change for children with autism and I/DD in foster care by ensuring they receive the understanding and specialized care they need to thrive.”

The Autism Foundation of Oklahoma is committed to improving the lives of Oklahomans with autism and their families across the lifespan. This new training program reflects AFO’s dedication to advocacy, education, and community collaboration.
