Oklahoma City, October 7, 2024 – A consequential election season for the United States is just around the corner and a new book titled “On Freedom” by award-winning American historian, Dr. Timothy Snyder, is asking if Americans have lost sight of what freedom means. Snyder will be at Full Circle Bookstore, fullcirclebooks.com, on October 25 at 6:30 p.m. for a book signing. Dr. Suzette Grillot, a University of Oklahoma professor of international and area studies, will conduct a conversational interview with Snyder.
Snyder has authored numerous books, including the multi-year #1 New York Times bestseller “On Tyranny”. Snyder is frequently sought in the national media for his expertise on issues related to European and Soviet Russian history, including the holocaust. Snyder’s new book ponders if too many of us look at freedom as the absence of state power by thinking we’re free if we can do and say as we please. Snyder poses that true freedom isn’t so much “freedom from” as “freedom to”—the freedom to thrive and take risks for futures we choose by working together.
Snyder said, “It’s a great pleasure for me to visit independent bookstores such as Full Circle on the ‘On Freedom’ tour. They perform an indispensable service to American freedom themselves! And it is always a thrill to speak in Oklahoma, as I do every few years, where I can see family and catch up with this special part of our country.”
Steven Zoeller, Full Circle Bookstore Assistant Manager said, “Full Circle aspires to be more than just a retail space. We want to provide a setting for intellectual conversations, and politics is not off limits. Dr. Snyder has written a provocative book in ‘On Freedom’ and I look forward to following the debate it sparks in our community.”
Snyder believes Americans are less free now than they were two decades ago. Drawing on the work of philosophers and political dissidents, conversations with contemporary thinkers, and his own observations, Snyder identifies in “On Freedom” practices and attitudes that he believes will allow us to design a government through which we and future generations can flourish.
“Near the end of an election cycle, our senses are fried and our politics have been debased by months of advertising and partisan rhetoric,” Zoeller continued. “As great as elections are, they can be quite vulgar and lowbrow. I hope that this conversation with Snyder and Grillot will sober us up, so to speak, and will center our attention on the issues. We’re going to see real intellectual chemistry on stage, nothing manufactured.”
Snyder is the Richard C. Levin Professor of History and Global Affairs at Yale University and a permanent fellow at the Institute for Human Sciences in Vienna. His work has inspired poster campaigns and exhibitions, sculptures, a punk rock song, a rap song, a play, and an opera, and he has appeared in over 50 films and documentaries.
The book signing and conversation with Timothy Snyder will be at Full Circle Bookstore on October 25 from 6:30 to 8:00 p.m. in the atrium at the indoor entrance of Full Circle Bookstore located in 50 Penn Place on the first floor at 1900 NW Expressway in Oklahoma City.
