OKLAHOMA CITY — A man who was trying to install a light in a gun safe large enough for him to walk into was trapped when the door closed behind him locking him in.
According to Maj. Scott Douglass with the Oklahoma City Fire Department, firefighters were called to the home when another person there could not get the safe to open even though they had the combination.
Once a fire crew arrived, they had to use the extrication equipment that they normally use to rescue persons from crashed vehicles. The equipment uses hydraulic pressure to open large metal objects like a crashed vehicle.
“There were four rods that run through the safe that secure the door and there was one that was stuck and just wouldn’t retract,” Douglass told Free Press. “That’s why we had to use the extrication equipment.”
The man was eventually freed and was uninjured.
The financial loss of the safe was not reported.
