The Metropolitan Library System sends this information as posted below:
For 94 years, the Metropolitan Library System has encouraged Oklahomans to keep their reading skills sharp with the Summer Reading program, running from June 1 to July 31. This program fosters a community of readers and a lifelong love of learning.
For little ones, Summer Reading boosts pre-reading and writing skills. For school-aged children, the program helps combat the “summer slide,” when students can lose academic progress over the break. Summer Reading keeps learning on track by encouraging kids to read for enjoyment and explore topics that interest them.
But Summer Reading isn’t just for kids. Adults can join in and earn prizes while enjoying books, audiobooks, graphic novels, blogs, magazines and more. Plus, caregivers who read aloud to children can count that time for both them and their child.
Teens can also get involved by participating in the program and by volunteering at the library.
This year’s Summer Reading theme, “Unearth a Story,” invites readers to dig into a good book, uncover hidden histories or explore the past. The theme serves as a reminder for all the stories waiting to be uncovered.

What to expect this year:
- 600-point goal: Every minute of reading counts for one point. Participants can earn up to 100 points through literacy activities and continue reading beyond the goal for additional prize entries.
- Beanstack app: Readers can track their progress using Beanstack. The app offers a reading session timer, barcode scanning for book logging and family account management. Paper logs and verbal confirmations are also welcomed alternatives.
- Prizes: Once readers reach the 600-point milestone, they can choose from two youth books, one adult book, or a Metro Library baseball cap. This year, readers will also receive coupons from library partners Pizza Hut and SusieCakes and entry into the grand prize drawing. Prize pickup runs from June 1 to July 31.
- Prize Drawings: This year, the drawing prizes include wireless headphones, a 10-day pass to the YMCA, and a play set for young children. Anyone who has earned a 600-point badge (and has their account linked to their library card) by July 31 is eligible for the drawing prizes.
- Grand Prize: The adult grand prize is an Apple iPad and a one-year household YMCA membership. The grand prize for teens is an iPad and a one-year YMCA youth membership. For elementary-age children, the grand prize is an iPad and a certificate for Youth Sports Registration or Group Swim Lesson. For little ones, the grand prize is a prize pack of early childhood toy sets and a certificate for Youth Sports Registration or Group Swim Lesson.
- Summer Fun and Neighborhood Arts: This year, Metro Library is bringing back Summer Fun programming to accompany Summer Reading with unique events from community partners like the Oklahoma City Museum of Art and the Oklahoma History Center. Metro Library is also hosting tons of interactive performances like Lucas Ross and the Sugar Free Allstars with our annual Neighborhood Arts program.
