PRESS RELEASE: Red Cross still urgently seeking over 100 volunteers for Sound the Alarm event

The American Red Cross of Central and Southwest Oklahoma sends this information as posted below:

[OKLAHOMA CITY, Sept. 18, 2025] — The American Red Cross of Central and Southwest Oklahoma has an urgent need for volunteers to help make homes in northeast Oklahoma City neighborhoods safer.

The Red Cross and partners will install free smoke alarms for local families in areas at high risk of home fires during a Sound the Alarm event in northeast Oklahoma City on Oct. 4. We’ll also teach residents how to make escape plans, how to prevent home fires and what to do during other common emergencies.

The Red Cross needs about 150 volunteers for this Sound the Alarm event; to date, fewer than 40 have signed up. Volunteers do not need previous experience in installing smoke alarms, using tools or providing safety education, and they do not need to be a current Red Cross volunteer.

“We provide the training and materials you need to be part of this important work,” said Loida Haffener Salmond, Executive Director of the Red Cross of Central and Southwest Oklahoma. “By giving just a few hours of your Saturday, you can change someone’s life.”

Sound the Alarm takes place Oct. 4 from 8:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. The event begins at the Red Cross office at 701 N Lindsay Ave. Visit redcross.org/OKSTA to sign up to volunteer.

Sound the Alarm is part of the national Red Cross Home Fire Campaign, which has helped save at least 2,479 lives since launching in October 2014.

Home fires are the nation’s most frequent disaster and they claim seven lives a day in the U.S., but having working smoke alarms can cut the risk of death by half.
