Suspect arrested after police fire on him during foot chase

— Police shooting #4 for the City of Oklahoma City in 2025

OKLAHOMA CITY — An Oklahoma City police officer fired his weapon during a foot chase Monday evening while pursuing a suspect wanted on two Oklahoma County warrants, according to the Oklahoma City Police Department.

The incident began shortly before 7 p.m. on Monday, July 21 when officers responded to a report of a man pointing a firearm near Southeast 44th Street and Eastern Avenue.

Officer Jalen Bullock, who has served two years with the department, located the suspect—identified as Zachariah Mills—in the 4500 block of Shallow Brook Drive in southeastern Oklahoma City.

Police believe Mills, 22, was holding a pistol when Bullock approached. Mills allegedly fled on foot, prompting a pursuit. During the chase, Bullock discharged his firearm. No one was struck by the gunfire, police said.

Mills was ultimately taken into custody in a nearby creek bed.

Just after midnight on Tuesday, he was booked on several complaints, including two outstanding Oklahoma County warrants—for possession of an imitation firearm and failure to appear—and a new charge of being a felon in possession of an imitation firearm.

For the Oklahoma City Police Department in 2025, this is the 4th police shooting.

The internal investigation of Bullock now begins as he goes on routine administrative leave.

In police shootings – internally termed “officer-involved shootings” – the officer goes on paid administrative leave while evidence is gathered by OKCPD investigators.

Then, that information is turned over to Oklahoma County District Attorney Vicki Behenna, who has determined that all officer-involved shootings will go before a grand jury to decide whether to bring charges against the officer.

Once that decision has been made, the internal investigation moves forward after questions about whether the shooting was a crime have been resolved.
