Shooting in Westside OKC takes one life — Suspect arrested

OKLAHOMA CITY — One man was shot to death in the parking lot of an apartment complex near NW 23rd and Meridian late Friday. Police have booked the suspect on a murder complaint.

Friday turned out to be a bloody beginning of the weekend with a stabbing in the early morning hours in NW OKC and then a shooting on the Westside late in the evening.

Patrol officers with the Oklahoma City Police Department were dispatched to an apartment complex at 1917 N. Minnie Lane near the intersection of NW 23rd and Meridian around 10:00 PM in response to reports of gunfire.

When they arrived they found one man, 45-year-old Michael Waters, who had been shot to death and was lying in the parking lot according to Sgt. Dillon Quirk in an OKCPD press release.

The death is homicide #72 for the City of Oklahoma City in 2024.

As detectives began working the case they identified and arrested a suspect, Joseph Stewart, 26, who was booked into the Oklahoma County Detention Center (Jail) on complaints of first-degree murder and destroying evidence.

Bond has been denied.

The case will be presented to the District Attorney’s Office who will ultimately determine if any charges will be filed.
