This December, the Metropolitan Library System offers holiday celebrations, hands-on art activities, creative workshops and programs for young readers. Visit metrolibrary.org for full details. Some programs require registration. Note that library locations will be closed all day Dec. 24-25.
Kick Off the Holiday Season Dec. 1
- Tree Lighting Celebration – Ronald J. Norick Downtown Library, Dec. 1 at 6 p.m. – 7 p.m.
- Don your most festive apparel and celebrate the lighting of the new 34-foot tree in the atrium with holiday activities, refreshments, and live musical performances. The event includes a holiday storytime, a tree ornament activity, and more. Not Your Average Joe Coffee Shop, connected to the library atrium, will be open during the event with their regular menu available, in addition to complimentary refreshments in the atrium. The tree will be on display all season for the community to enjoy and capture photos with loved ones, with more festive events planned.

- Oklahoma Youth Arts Foundation: The Nutcracker – Edmond Library, Dec. 2 at 2:30 p.m.
- A child-friendly performance and simple ballet demonstration for ages 4 to 12.
- Snow Queen Fairy Tale Play – Bethany Library, Dec. 6 at 10 a.m. and Northwest Library Dec. 6 at 3 p.m.
- A live performance of the classic story that inspired “Frozen.” For ages 5 to 12.
- Joyfest – Almonte Library, Dec. 8 from 6 to 8 p.m.
- Wear your favorite holiday pajamas and enjoy games, treats and winter activities.
- Cookies and Cheer – Capitol Hill Library, Dec. 10 at 4 p.m.
- A cookie-decorating program with supplies provided.
- Season of Giving Arts and Crafts Festival – Ralph Ellison Library, Dec. 13 at 1 p.m.
- Photos with Santa and ornament-making
- Reindeer Games – Del City Library, Dec. 13 at 1:30 p.m.
- A family event with carols, crafts and other holiday activities.
- Kids Holiday Shoppe – Southern Oaks Library, Dec. 16, 2-4 p.m. and 6-7:30 p.m.
- A shop where kids select gifts for loved ones and experience the joy of giving.
- Holiday Harp Concert – The Village Library, Dec. 20 at 1 p.m.
- Holiday performances by harpist Chelsea Bushong.
- Cozy Gaming with Hot Cocoa – Choctaw Library, Dec. 30 at 6 p.m.
- Relax with tabletop or video games and a warm drink.
Handmade Holidays: Enjoy these crafting events, and don’t forget that some branches offer access to tools such as Cricut machines, sewing stations and 3D printers.

ArtNow Events: In partnership with Oklahoma Contemporary’s “ArtNow 2025: Materials and Boundaries,” libraries are offering hands-on art programs funded by the Kirkpatrick Foundation. A full list is available online.
- ArtNow Take-Home Kits: Yarn Painting
- Create fiber art inspired by artist Irmgard Guel. Kits are available at locations across the system throughout December and January.
- Art Smart Tweens: Air Dry Clay – Northwest Library, Dec. 12 at 2 p.m.
- A creative session for ages 8 to 12.
- ArtNow: Kids Art Time – Belle Isle Library, Dec. 30 at 2 p.m.
- An afternoon of artmaking for young artists.
