OKLAHOMA CITY – Sept. 8, 2025 – Together with the Regional Food Bank of Oklahoma, Oklahoma Children’s Theatre (OCT) will bring the award-winning children’s play “Maddi’s Fridge” to the stage Sept. 26–Oct. 10 at the Children’s Center for the Arts on the campus of Oklahoma City University. oklahomachildrenstheatre.org.
“Maddi’s Fridge”, based on a book of the same name (Adapted by Anne Negri, From the book by Lois Brandt, Illustrations by Vin Vogel, Published by Flashlight Press, Produced by special arrangement with Plays for New Audiences) tells a heartfelt story of friendship and compassion in the face of hardship and food insecurity. It’s told with humor and warmth making it engaging for all ages, and relatable. The production performed by OCT’s Professional Company is timely for September’s Hunger Action Month.
In the play, young Sofia learns that her best friend Maddi’s home often has an empty fridge, and the two learn together how to respond with honesty and kindness.
“From the moment our team first read this script, we knew it was a story our community could embrace and connect through,” said Mollie Reid, Director of Programs, Oklahoma Children’s Theatre. ‘Maddi’s Fridge’ is a moving reminder of how each of us can help our neighbors,” Reid added. “Through this partnership, and our Hunger Action Month activities, we hope to show families that small acts of kindness, like donating canned goods, make a big difference.”
Oklahoma Children’s Theatre has also covered the cost for four schools to attend the production in exchange for their participation in a food drive benefiting the Regional Food Bank of Oklahoma. The organizations together will host the drive during the run of the show. School groups and community audiences are invited to both experience the story and take action by bringing non-perishable food items to the theatre lobby to support families in need.
“Every child deserves the chance to dream, learn and play without the burden of hunger,” said Stacy Dykstra, chief executive officer of the Regional Food Bank. “Nutritious food is the foundation for a child’s health, growth and creativity. Food and fund drives are incredibly important and make it possible for us to put healthy meals on the tables of families who need them most, ensuring that children can thrive both in school and on the stage of life.”
“Maddi’s Fridge” is recommended for ages 5 and up (especially 2nd–4th graders) and will include one sensory-friendly performance Saturday, Sept. 27 at 2 p.m. to ensure an inclusive, welcoming experience for all audience members.
