Fall is in full swing, and our library calendars are packed with cultural celebrations and spooky fun for all ages. Some events may require registration or have limited supplies. Visit metrolibrary.org/events/upcoming to sign up and find more programs.

Celebrate Hispanic/Latinx Heritage Month (Sept. 15 – Oct. 15): Library branches are hosting events that celebrate Hispanic/Latinx culture through art, performances and book discussions for all ages.

  • Discovering Frida Kahlo: Oct. 1, 4–5 p.m. at Choctaw Library
    • Explore the artist’s iconic art, and create your own self-portrait inspired by her style.
  • Dances of Panama with Grupo PanAmerica: Oct. 4, 12–1 p.m. at The Village Library and Oct. 5, 3–4 p.m. at Patience S. Latting Northwest Library
    • Celebrate Panamanian culture through traditional music and dance.
  • Reimagined Masterpieces: A Celebration of LatinX Heritage, Oct. 6–10 at Capitol Hill Library
    • Take-home color-by-number kits featuring reimagined classics with Hispanic cultural themes.
  • Felting for Hispanic Heritage Month: Oct. 7, 6:30–8:30 p.m. at Ralph Ellison Library
    • Make soft sculptures inspired by Latinx heritage. 
  • Día de los Muertos Story and Craft: Oct. 14, 6–6:45 p.m. at Edmond Library
    • Enjoy a story, learn about the holiday and create a sugar skull decoration.
  • Self-Portrait with Frida Kahlo Take-Home Kit: Pickup Begins Oct. 14 at The Village Library
    • Paint a self-portrait using symbolism and prompts inspired by the artist’s life. These adult-only kits include mature content.
  • BIPOC Book Club:” Mexican Gothic” by Silvia Moreno-Garcia: Oct. 20 at 6–7 p.m. at Capitol Hill Library
    • Join a thought-provoking discussion of this bestselling novel by a Latinx author.

Spooky Season: From storytimes to escape rooms, there’s something for everyone.

  • Halloween Carnival: Oct. 27, 5:30–7:30 p.m. at Almonte Library
    • Celebrate with games, prizes, food and an interactive storywalk. Costumes encouraged.
  • Paranormal Fest: Waning Moon: Oct. 18, 10 a.m.–4 p.m. at Ronald J Norick Downtown Library
    • A full day of ghost stories, tarot, escape rooms, crafts, spooky films and more.
  • Spooktacular Storytime & Parade: Oct. 30, 11 a.m.–Noon at Ronald J Norick Downtown Library
    •  Stories, costumes, and a parade through the library.
  • Halloween Party: Oct. 30, 5–7 p.m. at Midwest City Library
    • Come in costume and celebrate with games, treats and spooky vibes.
  • Halloween Storytimes & Costume Parades on Oct. 31
    • 10–11 a.m. at The Village Library
    • 10–10:45 a.m. at Warr Acres Library
    • 10:30–11:30 a.m. at Patience S. Latting Northwest Library

Celebrate Banned Books Week: October 1–7: Join us for fun and meaningful events that celebrate the books that spark conversations.

  • Outsiders Car Show: Oct. 4, 2:30–3:30 p.m. at Belle Isle Library
    • Classic cars inspired by “The Outsiders” roll in for a family-friendly event.
  • The Outsiders and Banned Book Week Celebration: Oct. 4, 3–4 p.m. at Belle Isle Library
    • Enjoy 60s music, trivia, crafts, and a talk from OKCU professor Tracy Floreani.
  • Evening Read-Aloud Marathon: Oct. 4 at 6 p.m. at Full Circle Bookstore at 1900 Northwest Expy, Oklahoma City, OK 73118
    • Community leaders read “The Outsiders” from cover to cover. All proceeds benefit the Library Endowment Trust.

Discover Your Roots: October is Archives Month, and the library is offering expert-led programs to help you preserve your family’s past and manage your digital life.

  • Sidewalk Genealogy – Uncover Your Roots: Oct. 4, 11 a.m.–2 p.m. at Vault 405 at 10 N Broadway, Edmond, OK 73034
    • Explore your family history in a relaxed outdoor setting with genealogy pros.
  • Saving & Preserving Your Family Heirlooms: Oct. 8, 5–6 p.m. at Midwest City Library, Oct. 11, 3–4 p.m. at Belle Isle Library, and Oct. 26, 4–5 p.m. at Patience S. Latting Northwest Library
    • Learn how to store, preserve and protect your family’s keepsakes with professional materials and expert guidance.
  • How to Handle Digital Overload: Oct. 11, 1–2 p.m. at Belle Isle Library and Oct. 26, 2–3 p.m. at Patience S. Latting Northwest Library
    • Tips and tools for managing digital documents and photos.

AltFest at the Library: Celebrating the weird and wonderful!

  • AltFest – Oct. 11, 11 a.m.-4 p.m. at the Ronald J Norick Downtown Library
    • This brand-new event features a Battle of the Bands, where local bands compete live in the fourth-floor auditorium. Attendees can also explore Artist Alley, showcasing artists and nonprofits, and enjoy the Monster Pageant, open to all skill levels. The event includes a makerspace offering punk-style fabric patches and a temporary tattoo parlor.
