PRESS RELEASE: ACLU to host town hall urging Rep. Cole to protect people, not power

The ACLU of Oklahoma sends this information as posted below:

MOORE — The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) and the ACLU of Oklahoma will host a town hall on Tuesday, August 26th, urging Representative Tom Cole to reject cuts to education that would disproportionately impact Oklahomans, particularly students from low income and rural communities.

As the federal elected representative of Oklahoma’s 4th Congressional District and the Chair of the House Appropriations Committee, Rep. Cole must exercise his authority to reject cuts to education in the appropriations process for fiscal year 2026.

WHO:

  • Tamya Cox-Touré, Executive Director, ACLU of Oklahoma
  • Carlos Moreno, National Campaigns Director, Systemic Equality, ACLU National
  • Tori Pennington, President, Oklahoma City American Federation of Teachers, Local 2309
  • Misty Bradley, Chair, Oklahoma Parent Legislative Action
  • Sandra Valentine, Founding Member and Lead Research Analyst, Oklahoma Rural School Coalition

Representative Tom Cole has been invited to attend.

WHAT:
“People, Not Power”: A Town Hall on Protecting Education and Civil Rights
Hosted by ACLU of Oklahoma and partners

WHEN:
Tuesday, August 26, 2025 at 6:30 PM

WHERE:
Moore Public Library (Room A)
225 S Howard Ave, Moore, OK 73169

WHY:
Over $218M in public education funding is on the line in Oklahoma. Cuts to education in the budget bill for fiscal year 2026 would eliminate critical federal support that Oklahoma relies on to provide resources and services to pre K-12 students; dismantle the federal office that enforces civil rights protections, leaving Oklahoma students with nowhere to file discrimination complaints; and threaten access to quality learning environments and deny thousands of students, particularly those from low income and rural communities, the support they need. It’s critical that members of Congress take a public stand. This community forum provides constituents a platform to be heard and demand action.
