OKLAHOMA CITY – After Senators Lankford and Mullin ignored an invitation to answer constituent questions face-to-face in a traditional Town Hall Meeting, Indivisible Oklahoma shifted gears to offer an Empty Chair Town Hall. A panel of local experts on national concerns discussed the questions voters would have liked to ask their Senators. A total of 131 people attended, and 51 questions were submitted at the August 25 event at Bethany Library.
“Those breaks are not supposed to be vacations for the senators. Those are when they are supposed to come back to their constituents who have elected them and talk to them and meet with them,” said Cindy Alexander, Co-Leader of Indivisible Oklahoma.
Attendees addressed their questions to the Senators despite their absence, and each topic was discussed among three community leaders: Mark Davies, Angela Monson and Brendan Hoover. Davies is an Oklahoma City University Professor of Social and Ecological Ethics and Director of the World House Institute for Social and Ecological Responsibility. Monson is Together Oklahoma’s Outreach and Legislative Director who has been an advocate for change for more than five decades, and she served for 15 years as a member of the Oklahoma Legislature in first the House and then Senate. Hoover serves as coordinator for Kirkpatrick Policy Group, advocating in the areas of animals, the arts, art education and women’s reproductive health.
When time for questions ran out, the organization gathered index cards with the remaining questions to deliver to the Senators.
