Northeast OKC shooting leads to 15th homicide for 2026


OKLAHOMA CITY – A shooting victim that was rushed to the hospital in critical condition Thursday morning has died, leading to a suspect booked for murder and to the city’s 15th homicide of the year.

Just before 8:30am Thursday morning, Oklahoma City police responded to a shooting call in the area of NE 11th Street and Missouri Avenue.

At the scene, officers found that 29-year-old Jerel Smith had been shot.

Smith was rushed to an area hospital where it was reported Thursday that he remained in critical condition.

Police located 20-year-old August Sobreira Freeland Moeckel, who investigators determined had been involved in an altercation with Smith prior to the shooting.

It was later reported that Smith succumbed to his injuries from the shooting and died at the hospital.

August Sobreira Freeland Moeckel was booked by police on a count of second-degree murder late Thursday night.

Jerel Smith’s death will be recorded as the 15th homicide for OKC in 2026.

Note: As of publication, the information provided by the Oklahoma City Police Department has not yet been tested in court. Under the law, all persons are considered innocent until proven guilty before a jury of their peers or a plea of guilt.
