Hotel security guard shot to death — teen booked for murder

— 16-year-old also pistol-whipped hotel staffer, shot himself during altercation

OKLAHOMA CITY — A hotel security guard was shot and killed early Sunday morning during a confrontation outside the Wyndham Grand Hotel in downtown Oklahoma City. A 16-year-old has been arrested in connection with the killing.

The death marks the 2nd homicide for the City of Oklahoma City in 2026.

Patrol officers with the Oklahoma City Police Department were called to the hotel, located near Broadway Avenue and Sheridan Avenue, shortly before 2:40 a.m. and found the guard, identified as 22-year-old Sunjun July, in the parking lot with a gunshot wound

July was taken to a nearby hospital where he died, according to OKCPD Master Sergeant Gary Knight.

Another hotel employee was also injured during the incident after being pistol-whipped. That employee was hospitalized and later released.

After an initial investigation, detectives now believe a group of juveniles entered the hotel lobby and were asked to leave by security staff. The confrontation escalated into a physical altercation in the parking lot involving at least one of the juveniles and the two hotel employees.

During the altercation, police believe 16-year-old Warren Colbert pulled out a handgun, shot July, and hit the other employee with the weapon. Investigators said Colbert accidentally shot himself in the leg during the encounter.

He fled the scene on foot but was located a short time later and taken into custody. Colbert was treated for his wound at a hospital, then booked into the Juvenile Detention Center on a murder complaint.

Anyone with information related to the case is asked to call the Homicide Tip-Line at (405) 297-1200.
